Logan County, WV teen battling cancer

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WYMT/WSAZ) - On a day with hundreds of Easter services across our area, one special service was held at a local hospital Sunday for a teenager relying on his faith to get through his sickness.

Family and friends of 14-year-old Skyler Miller came together for a special Easter service in the waiting area outside the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Cabell-Huntington Hospital.

Miller, who is a freshman at Logan High School, has acute myloid leukemia. But doctors discovered it by chance.

"It's an act of providence how he came to us," Mark Mogul, Miller's doctor, said. "He had an ATV accident in Logan."

When Miller went to the hospital to get checked out after the accident last Saturday, his blood tests were abnormal. Doctors diagnosed him with leukemia. His form of it requires aggressive chemotherapy.

Miller and his loved ones are getting through this because of their faith.

"[Miller] is like, 'This is all in the Lord's hands and I trust him, and what will be will be, and I'm prepared for anything,'" Mogul said.

Maci Hatcher is one of Miller's long-time friends. They attend church together at New Life Free Will Baptist Church, where Miller is involved in teen outreach.

"God just drove us all here to make everybody that came and supports him realize that God's gonna take care of it, it's gonna be okay," Hatcher said.

Hatcher sang a song for Miller at Sunday's service. She said Miller is the type of kid who gets along with everyone.

"We love you, Skyler, and we hope you'll get better and we know you're gonna get better," Hatcher said.

Doctors say Miller will be going through chemotherapy for about six months to treat his leukemia.
