Longtime Harlan County mayor resigns, cites health reasons

BENHAM, Ky. (WYMT) - A long time Eastern Kentucky mayor has resigned, citing health problems.

The Harlan Daily Enterprise reports Benham mayor John "Tater" Dodd stepped down during a special called city council meeting Thursday night.

The paper reports the move led to a heated discussion between the council members, before they called for a vote for Dodd's wife Shirley to take his place.

Councilman George Massey protested the vote, saying it was out of order.

The rest of the council voted in favor of Shirley Dodd taking the position.
