Longtime Williamson police chief resigns, takes job with sheriff's department

MINGO COUNTY, W.Va. (WYMT/WSAZ) - Williamson Police Chief Dave Rockel has retired from the police force, but he isn't leaving law enforcement.

Rockel says he retired as chief on June 30.
He will now be the Chief Field Deputy of Operations for the Mingo County Sheriff's Office.

Rockel has been working with the Sheriff's Office for several months, helping battle the drug epidemic.

When Sheriff Eugene Crum was murdered in April, Rockel was appointed Interim Chief of Operations.

Rockel says with his position, he will be over daily operations.

He says he believes this is what former Sheriff Eugene Crum, as well as new Sheriff Rosie Crum, would have wanted.

Rockel tells us he may run for Sheriff in a future election.
Williamson Mayor Darrin McCormick says during an organizational meeting Monday, council appointed Barry Blair to the Williamson Police Chief position.

McCormick says Blair has nearly two decades of law enforcement experience.

Blair begins his role as Chief on July 15.
