A man was arrested and charged with Second Degree Robbery, as well as several misdemeanors following an incident around eight o'clock Saturday night outside the Magic Mart in hazard. Police say he snatched a purse from a woman as she was loading groceries into her car.
It began as typical, every day, kind of moment: A woman loading her car with groceries while her daughter waited inside the vehicle, but that moment quickly took a turn for the worse.
“The mother was putting groceries in the vehicle. A male subject came behind her and physically pushed her kind of into the vehicle, grabbed the purse off her arm and took off running,” said Sergeant David Wiseman, of the Hazard City Police Department.
Just hours after the incident, around 9:30pm, Hazard police arrested 31-year-old Ryan York of West Liberty, after identifying him with the assistance of Magic Mart's security cameras and a description given by the victim.
“Officer's went up to a residence close to the area that he might have been at. Actually located him there. And actually had some of the victim's property on his person and in the residence,” Wiseman said.
In addition to Second Degree Robbery, York is also charged with four misdemeanors: Fleeing or Evading Police (2nd degree), Menacing, Resisting Arrest and Possession of Marijuana.
We reached out to Ryan York, and while he declined to be interviewed on camera, he says that he is innocent of all the charges against him.
York is currently being held at Kentucky River Regional Jail. Hazard police officers declined to release the name of the victim or her daughter, and we were unable to reach them.
