Man admits to taking Pineville teen to Connecticut

PINEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT/WKYT) - He says he was trying to rescue a teen from an abusive situation.

David Hernandez, 51, is behind bars for allegedly picking up a Bell County teen and taking her to his home in Connecticut.

Friday in an exclusive interview with WYMT's Angela Sparkman, Hernandez apologizes and admits to picking the teen up.

On Thursday, David Hernandez was extradited back to Kentucky to face felony charges.

Sheriff's Deputies say on January 2nd, he took 14 year old Madison York from her home in Pineville to his home in New Britain, Connecticut.

"My intention was not to hurt her or anybody in this town in Kentucky," said Hernandez.

Hernandez says the girl had an online relationship with his teenage son. The family thought she was 18.

"It was stupid from my side of not asking of any proof of her age," said Hernandez.

Hernandez admits he, his wife, and son picked up the girl from her home and drove her more than 800 miles away. He claims he thought he was rescuing his son's girlfriend from an abusive situation.

"I'm a family man. I'm a Christian man," said Hernandez.

He is charged with custodial interference and unlawful transaction with a minor. He is being held in the Bell County Detention Center on a one million dollar bond.

"The fact he came down here from Connecticut and took a 14 year old girl out of this county," said David Cornelius, Bell County Sheriff's Chief Deputy.

York's parents do not want to comment on Hernandez at this time. They are waiting to see what happens in court.

"I apologize to this town for whatever I did, that was not my intention. I really apologize to Madison's parents for what happened," said Hernandez.

Hernandez pleaded not guilty to the charges in Bell County District Court on Friday. A preliminary hearing is scheduled on January 29th to determine if the case should go to the grand jury.
