BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - Police in Knox County say a young girl was the victim of sexual assault in a public place.
Jessie Trosper, who lives across the street from where it happened, has lived on Church St. with his family for 12 years.
“We love it here; good neighbors; good neighborhood until this situation has popped up,” said Trosper.
Barbourville police say Christopher Hubbard spent Saturday with 3 juveniles, but they say he took things too far while at an abandoned store on Church Street.
“We had an 18 year old suspect that had subjected a young girl under the age of 12 to inappropriate sexual contact,” said Steve Owens with the Barbourville Police Department.
Police say Hubbard threatened to kill the young girl if she did not perform the sexual act.
They say that witnesses came to the back of the store to find their friend, who they had been with for most of the day, but instead saw what was happening.
That's when they ran to tell an adult, because both of those witnesses were under the age of 13.
Now, Trosper says he worries about the safety of his own two daughters.
“We're cautious about our kids here. We keep an eye on them when they're playing, but sometimes if it gets this close you don't want your kids to play outside,” said Trosper.
Hubbard is in the Knox County jail, but the Trosper say they hope police will begin making patrols on their street.
Hubbard was charged with sexual abuse, unlawful transaction with a minor and terroristic threatening.
