HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) Christina Barnett's family says they could breathe a sigh of relief after Thursday night.
Police arrested Gary Ward at his home near Meally in Johnson County.
Ward is facing charges of murder, tampering with physical evidence, and abuse of a corpse.
Prosecutors said in an indictment that he intentionally treated Barnett's corpse in a way that would "outrage ordinary family sensibilities."
Ward's friends say they are shocked at the arrest, and cannot believe he could do anything like that.
Ward's arraignment is scheduled for November 14th in the Knott County Circuit Court.
A man is behind bars tonight, charged in the death of Christina Barnett.
Police arrested Gary Ward on Thursday in Knott County in connection with the murder of the Johnson County woman.
WYMT crews were there when state police brought Ward to the Kentucky River Regional Jail.
Police say earlier today an indictment was issued out of Knott County stemming from Christina Barnett's murder, whose body was found along Highway 80 in September.
The indictment was for one count each of murder, tampering with physical evidence, and abuse to a corpse.
Police tell us around 7 pm Thursday they arrested Gary Ward, 37, at his home in Johnson County.
Christina Barnett's family tells WYMT they suspected Ward from the beginning and are very glad an arrest has been made, though the murder investigation is ongoing.
