LETCHER COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) A Letcher County man is facing an animal cruelty charge after witnesses say he killed a kitten.

Robert Machniak of Jenkins was arrested Thursday evening on Number One Hill.

Police say they had received several complaints about Machniak that day, saying the man had been threatening family members and his brother's girlfriend.

Police say when they found Machniak, he was drunk and had just thrown a kitten onto the ground.

"It couldn't move when I got there," said Assistant Police Chief Crystal Davis, "It was prowling and it was gasping for breath. It was sad. It died while I was there."

Police say other charges are pending against Machniak, the case remains under investigation.
