MINGO COUNTY, W.Va. (WYMT/WSAZ) - A chase spanning three counties led to a crash and a man behind bars.

Gilbert Police say it took officers more than an hour and about 50 miles to catch up to the suspect.

Police say Steve Fortner attempted to steal gas and sell drugs at a Speedway in Gilbert, but that's not what started the chase.

Fortner was caught speeding, going south on U.S. 52 but instead of stopping, he sped up, according to police.

Police chased Fortner into Wyoming County and over into McDowell County. He lost control of his car in Panther State Forest after hitting a rock cliff. A woman was also in the car.

Police say Fortner has a previous record that is some 10 pages long. He now faces several charges, including kidnapping.
