A Laurel County man is in jail after police said he beat his roommate to death a little more than a month ago.
Laurel County Sheriff’s Deputy Gilbert Acciardo said they were suspicious from the beginning when Freddy Couch told them he and his roommate Kenneth Vincent got into a drunken fight at the end of April. A 9-1-1 call the next morning from a woman said there was an altercation. Both of them fell asleep and Vincent never woke up.
Acciardo said deputies said they thought something did not add up when 56-year-old Freddy Couch told them he was defending himself when he got into a fight with his roommate, Kenneth Vincent, on April 29th at their home on Laurel Road.
“We were suspicious from the start that it was not self-defense,” said Acciardo.
Autopsy results given to police indicated 36-year-old Vincent died from his injuries.
“Kicked, hit, beaten with objects, he was actually beaten to death,” said Acciardo.
Police said after the initial investigation they were left wondering what really happened that night. As it turns out, they said there was more to the story.
“Initially when the officers investigated there were some stories that were told that contradicted what they were told at the scene and that got our suspicions up,” said Acciardo.
“And when we got our autopsy results back that is what confirmed what we suspected.”
Couch was taken to the Laurel County Detention Center on June 1, 2012 where he is being held on a $250,000 cash bond.
Couch will be in court for an arraignment at 11 a.m. on June 4. He declined our request for an interview.
