Police say the teenager was driving a motorcyle down Highway 122 in the Melvin community of Floyd County when he was hit by another car that drove away.

It is a curvy two-lane road, but one that is well traveled. And early Thursday morning 18-year-old Alex Mullins was one of those travelers, but things went terribly wrong.

"Post 9 Pikeville received a call of a collision on KY-122 in the Melvin community of Floyd County," said KSP Trooper Shaun Little.

Police say Mullins was driving a miniature sports motorcycle when he was hit by another car. The driver of that car did not stop.

Detectives responded to the scene.

"Through the course of their investigation, working together, they located the vehicle that was involved in the collision," said Little.

They say the car was a Saturn SUV driven by 26-year-old Chester Hunter. Hunter was arrested and taken to the Floyd County Detention Center.

"Hunter was charged with dui 1st degree, leaving the scene of an accident, and failure to render aid, along with other traffic charges," said Little.

Police say this is not the first time Hunter has been in trouble.

"To my understanding there was other active warrants for mister hunter, but he was lodged on the charges that i spoke of earlier," said Little.

Mullins' family members say they are grieving the loss of a young man who had a long life ahead of him.
