Police say a man from San Antonio, Texas was caught with two and a half pounds of marijuana in his car in Bell County!
36 year old Douglas Eugene Hensley was arrested early Saturday at a traffic checkpoint in Middlesboro near the Cumberland Gap Tunnel.

Monday, he talked to WYMT's Angela Sparkman in jail and claimed he had a prescription for it!

Douglas Hensley says he came to Kentucky to visit family but ended up in jail instead.

"They told me what I was charged with and it's still kind of shocking because I'm not used to it," Hensley said.

Hensley admits he had two and a half pounds of marijuana in his car when he crossed into Kentucky at the Cumberland Gap Tunnel in Middlesboro.

"I've been on medical marijuana for like seven years now," said Hensley.

He claims he has multiple injuries from a coal mine accident a decade ago.

"My back's damaged; my neck's damaged. I've got a cracked skull," he said.

He says a California doctor prescribes marijuana for him, and he has it delivered from California to his home in San Antonio. He said he thought it was okay to bring it to Kentucky when visiting family.

State police say during a traffic checkpoint on 25E, he had no license or insurance, then a K9 found the pot.

Even though Hensley says only he planned to use the marijuana here, state police are still investigating what his intentions were in Bell County.

"We're still investigating to figure out if he is making regular runs from San Antonio, Texas to Bell County with large amount of marijuana," said Trooper Shane Jacobs.

We asked Hensley if he was dealing marijuana.

"No, no, no, I don't believe in that. I'm not a bad person. Just shouldn't have brought it with me," he answered.

He plans to tell his story to the judge at his court appearance on July 17th.

Hensley is charged with trafficking marijuana.

Hensley's fiance and friend were also in the car, Anne M. Helser and James R. Dove, both of San Antonio. Police only issued them a citation for marijuana possession.
