A man is charged with murder following a weekend hit and run.

State police arrested 52-year-old Freddy Smith after the crash on U.S. 421 in Clay County Saturday night.

Investigators say Smith hit Leroy Gilliam and kept going.

Gilliam died at the scene.

Police do suspect alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.

In addition to murder, Smith also faces DUI, leaving the scene, no insurance and drug related charges.
