Police say he was driving recklessly with drug paraphernalia when he hit a Pike County Deputy's cruiser.

47 year old David Wayne Childers is charged with murder in connection with the crash that killed deputy James I. Thacker.

Monday morning he appeared in court for the first time.

Childers entered a not guilty plea to the murder charge.

Police say excessive speed is one factor that caused the crash.

They also found drug paraphernalia in his SUV.

Amidst heavy security, a judge told 47 year old David Wayne Childers he was charged with murder for the death of James I. Thacker, a Pike County Sheriff's Deputy.

It was a moment the Sheriff wanted.

“He needs to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law because he was in an accident that killed one of my deputies. I have no sympathy for anybody like that,” Pike County Sheriff Charles “Fuzzy” Keesee said.

Police say Childers was speeding when he allegedly crossed the center line and hit Thacker's cruiser head on.

Investigators say they found drug paraphernalia in his SUV after the crash.

“It was evidence that contributed to the cause of the collision. Information and evidence obtained by Detective Anderson and Trooper Crum was used to obtain the arrest warrant,” Trooper Shaun Little said.

Childers entered a not guilty plea.

The judge ordered him held with no bond.

The Sheriff plans to see the case through the court system.

“He may have to spend the rest of his life in prison and I wouldn't care if he did because that's what he deserves in my opinion,” Sheriff Keesee said.

The public defender said she could not comment on the charges against Childers at this time.
Police are still waiting for Childers' toxicology reports.

Also, Childers father works at the Pike County Courthouse, so the Pike County District Judges removed themselves from the case and a judge from Ashland is handling it.
