Man charged with threatening hospital

Posted: Tue 12:25 AM, Oct 18, 2011

The switchboard had been lighting up at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset, but usually the person at the other end…was the same person…with the same threat…saying there was a bomb inside.

Police say a total of 10 calls were made between Oct. 8th and 16th.

They won’t say what the caller’s motivation was, but no explosives were ever found. Yet each call was taken very seriously. Police and firefighters were called…and some hospital personnel were taken away from their normal duties.

“That’s taking away from somebody’s health care,” said Lt. Shannon Smith with Somerset Police.

Police say a programming issue prevented them from finding the person’s number right away..and the suspect even tried to intentionally throw them off.

“At one point he called in and identified himself as someone that was not the correct name,” said Smith.

But once police got his number, they indentified him as 46 year old Jeffrey Croucher, who was arrested at his home in Clay County.

“Nothing was found to give us any indication he was following through on those threats,” said Smith.

With Croucher in jail, the threats have stopped and police believe the problem is solved.
