Last month, the Magoffin County sheriff says a domestic dispute turned ugly.
Mary Risner was shot in the hip, and she says Gary Fletcher did it.
"We've been looking for the suspect since, and we were not able to find him," said Magoffin County Sheriff Carson Montgomery.
Police say they searched for Fletcher for a month before finding him living in a barn in Montgomery County.
He was brought to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center Tuesday, where he maintains his innocence.
"I didn't do it. No," said Fletcher.
"I think it kind of rose from a domestic dispute and then the dispute over property once they had separated," said Montgomery.
"I was leaving but she wasn't going to give me nothing I had. I bought a camper. She wouldn't do that either. She wouldn't give me nothing. So that is why they say I shot Mary," said Fletcher.
As the interview went on, he became increasingly bitter that he was in jail for something he says he did not do.
"I think Mary went overboard about a lot of things, just put it this way. She don't care for nobody but Mary," said Fletcher.
He says the whole thing just got blown out of proportion.
"She got mad at me, then after I left she didn't want me to leave. But like I told her that morning I wasn't coming back, and I ain't going back. If i have to stay right here til something happens to me, I ain't going back," said Fletcher.
Fletcher is being held on assault charges.
