Man is arrested in Harlan County

A man is arrested after a bizarre incident in Cumberland.

Police in Cumberland got a report from a Georgia dispatch center that Eric Smith had been shot and injured while camping with a friend near Slope Hollow Road.

The Harlan Daily reports that Smith told family members in Georgia he was bleeding badly and was not sure if he could make it off the mountain alive.

While investigating, police saw a man walking through the Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College campus with a backpack.

As officers approached, the man started throwing punches.

Police tazed the suspect, but soon learned that man was actually Eric Smith who was reported shot.

Police found several Social Security Cards and photo ID's on him, but never found anyone else in the area.

He is now in the Harlan County Detention Center charged with falsely reporting an incident, third degree assault, being a fugitive from another state, several bench warrants from Bell and Harlan Counties among several other charges.
