A Letcher County man was shot to death while walking his dog. Family members are not sure how to come to terms with it all.

"I think you just take it moment by moment," said Melissa Sturgill, the victim's wife.

She said she keeps replaying the scene over and over.

"I just kept thinking that he was going to be ok and he was going to pull through, that they would get him to the hospital and stabilize him," said Sturgill.

But that was not the case.

Kentucky State Police charged Samuel Collier, 32, with the murder of Mark Sturgill.

Family members said Sturgill took his dog Jake out for a walk, and then they heard shots.

"I knew that he had been shot, and I knew who shot him, and I knew why, the dog," said Sturgill.

Police said Collier then called 911 on himself to report that he shot Sturgill.

When police arrived, they found Sturgill bleeding in the middle of the street and the dog shot to death.

Investigators said Sturgill did have a weapon.

"At this point our investigation seems to indicate the gun was in its holster, that he was armed," said Shaun Little with Kentucky State Police.

Family members said that shows he had no time to react.

"If Mark Sturgill drew a gun on somebody, he would have pulled the trigger," said Melissa Sturgill.

Sturgill's family remarked he was one of a kind.

"Mark was indescribable, very adventurous, an adrenaline junkie," said his wife Melissa.

State police are still trying to figure out whether this was the result of an ongoing dispute between the two neighbors.

Sturgill's body was sent to Frankfort for an autopsy. He leaves behind his wife and two teenage sons.
