With only two Kentucky locations, eastern Kentucky veterans must sometimes travel hours to receive care at a VA hospital. But Hazard Mayor Nan Gorman is doing everything in her power to bring a VA hospital to Perry County.
Mayor Gorman believes the drive eastern Kentucky veterans make to the nearest VA hospital is inconvenient.
"If you are a veteran and have to go to a hospital you have to go to Johnson City, Tennessee or Huntington or the vicinity of Lexington." she says.
And in her eyes, Hazard is the perfect location for another VA hospital
"We are centrally located on the line from Middlesboro to Ashland." Gorman adds.
Silas Adams, Commander, for the Disabled American Veterans Perry County Chapter couldn't agree more. Adams says Eastern Kentucky has one of the highest numbers of veterans in the state.
"There's thirty six thousand plus in this area that rely on having to travel long distances and that's not good for a person who's sick." he says.
That's why Gorman and many other community members have written letters and even signed a petition to get the ball rolling on this project
"Thirty thousand people that have signed signatures to have a hospital in this area so we really need to expedite this and get it done away." says Adams.
Gorman says all they can do now is wait on a response from Washington to see if the project is realistic. She asks all those who support this idea to write our local legislators.
