Memories lost in fire

The old Hazard High School that burned Sunday night was more than an apartment building.

It housed the memories of those who walked its halls as students and teachers for decades.

This fire will take more than just the contents inside, it will take with it some of the memories of those who walked the hallways as Hazard High School Alumni.

There were no flames Monday morning, but the water was still flowing from the fire. And it brought with it a flood of memories.

The old hazard high school built in 1924 was home to the bulldogs for more than fifty years before becoming an apartment building and it remained a local landmark.

Now the last memory Hazard will have of its old high school could be the fire that gutted it, just days before Christmas.

The families who lived inside the Ebelen Apartments said at first it looked like all of Christmas was lost, but the biggest gift was that everyone made it out alive.

According to an old Hazard yearbook, the building cost nearly 115-thousand dollars when it was constructed in the 1920's.

The first WKIC radio broadcast also originated from the old high school auditorium in 1947.
