BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - Earlier this week, WYMT handed out more than one hundred scholarships at the Mountain Basketball Classic.
The Ralph Gabbard Memorial Scholarship is awarded to students with an interest in communications careers.
Thursday, we introduce you to another winner, Michaela Miller from Knox Central High School.
Michaela Miller has loved the media since she was a child.
"I really liked to write when I was younger, and I've always loved just taking pictures and being involved with the media," Miller said.
At Knox Central High School, her love of journalism grew and she even got to work in the media. Through a school co-op program, she works at local station, TV-4.
"Which is a really good job experience for me. I get to video games, take pictures at games, write news articles. I even get to video some commercials. It's just a really good experience," Miller said.
She hopes it leads to a media career.
"I thought about working for a newspaper or a TV station or something, or anything involved with the media. I just love doing that," she said.
After she graduates high school this year, she plans to attend college. She is undecided on where, but knows she will study journalism.
The Ralph Gabbard Memorial Scholarship will help her do that. She still can't believe she is receiving it.
"I was very excited. I had no idea I would win it and I'm just so thankful that I got a thousand dollars to go towards college because it's hard to come by that you know," Miller said.
Miller says she is looking forward to the future, and says her favorite memories of high school will be working at TV-4 to start her career.
