Mild winter weather has explanation

Here in eastern Kentucky, we have not really seen much of old man Winter yet.

There is an explanation for the mild winter, but most people do not seem to mind the warmer temperatures.

Punxsutawney Phil is predicting six more weeks of winter, but in eastern Kentucky some say Winter never really started.

"It's a beautiful day. This is weird winter weather isn't it? It's normally supposed to be 20 or 30 degrees, and it's in the 50's," said Ulis Combs of Perry County.

There is a reason for these 50 degree temperatures. Ed Ray with the National Weather Service says we are in a La Nina pattern right now which allows for rainy and warm weather.

He says the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is also keeping the colder air at bay.

"Last year the NAO was quite negative which is more indicative of more snowy weather, more colder weather. This year the North Atlantic Oscillation has been positive," said Ray.

Many people were at Perry County Park on Thursday enjoying the weather, and they hope it continues.

"Groundhog's seen its shadow. If it's any indication of six more weeks of weather like, this I'm looking forward to it!," said Combs.

Ray says Winter is not over yet, and we could still see some colder weather, but for the most part it should remain mild.
