FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - The Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives says more 2.5 million people in Kentucky hold library cards, and they checked out almost 20 million books last year from public libraries.

KDLA says in addition, more than nine million audio-visual items were checked out.

The numbers were compiled from 2012 statistics submitted by the state's 119 public library systems.

Attendance at children's programs rose 3.5 percent in 2012, setting a record with more than 1.2 million participants.

The state says collections of e-books increased to more than 3 million last year statewide.
