Mingo County, WV mother indicted on abuse charges in baby's death

A woman is behind bars, charged with abuse that led to the death of her baby.

Brittany Scott, 25, formerly of North Matewan, W.Va., is charged with child abuse resulting in death.

The charge stems back to March 18, 2011. Mingo County Sheriff's Cpl. Norman Mines tells our sister station that about 9 a.m. Scott left her 5-month-old child in his pack-and-play on the second floor.

Scott told investigators she went to the first floor of her apartment in Magnolia Gardens, where she watched TV and napped with other children. It was 2:30 p.m. before she went to check on the baby again, and she found him unresponsive in a garbage bag.

The case went straight to the Mingo County Grand Jury, where she was indicted last week.

Mines says that the Mingo County Sheriff's Office, along with the Medical Examiner's Office, spent several months working on this case before presenting it to the grand jury, to make sure their case was complete.

Mines says drugs are not believed to be involved in this case.

Scott is expected to be back in court in late February.
