Some people at a Harlan County Hospital thought they witnessed a meteor shower today but it was something entirely different.

A well was being drilled on Grey's Knob mountaintop near the hospital. The well had several softball sized plastic balls inside of it and when the pressure was being released several of the balls went flying into the air, and at least one traveled around a mile.

“They immediately shut the well down to try to prevent any further damage or loss of the balls. unfortunately one ball did travel maybe about a mile into the yard area of the Appalachian Regional Hospital,” said Mike Thomas, Chief of the Harlan Police Department.

Thomas said it left around a six inch hole in the ground. No injuries or other property damage was reported. There are still around five balls unaccounted for which could be in the well. Anyone with property damage should notify Harlan City Police.
