GREEN HILLS, Ky (WYMT) - A mission team from Knoxville made their way to Harlan County Monday to hand out free school supplies for students at Green Hills Elementary.

Mission of Hope out of Knoxville partners with several schools in the Appalachian Mountains to take the burden of buying school supplies off of parents.

Volunteers from Grace Baptist Church in Knoxville teamed up with Mission of Hope to provide these essential school supplies to students at Green Hills Elementary.

Volunteers say the experience was rewarding.

"The excitement of the kids. I guess when you don't have the essentials, and you are trying to think of what you are going to be in life, and I know how that feels. It's very important to have an education," said David Lawless who attends Grace Baptist Church.

The group greeted the kids with applause and smiles.

They filled each student's backpack with pencils, crayons, paper, and other school supplies.

"It helps the kids, and that's what we are here for, the children. And it's a very good thing," said Principal Darlene Brock.

"This is something just outside of Knoxville, but still close enough to call home. And it's just a great opportunity to care and love people that are our neighbors," said Todd Stewart who is the Pastor of Missional Strategies at Grace Baptist Church.

Grace Baptist Church is now partnering with Green Hills Elementary.

They will come back at Christmas and other times throughout the year.
