More people are caught smuggling drugs into Pike County Jail

A woman already in trouble with the law is accused of trying to smuggle drugs into the Pike County Detention Center.

35 year old Shellie Duncan of Island Creek was brought to jail on theft charges and now faces more charges of promoting contraband.
Officers say she had dozens of prescription pills on her.

"Keep them, take them, give them to other inmates, It's something we take serious and the Commonwealth's Attorney takes serious, and she will be prosecuted," said Jailer Rodney Scott.

Jailers say it's a growing problems as more and more people are trying to smuggle drugs into the jail.
"It seems like every time someone gets arrested, it's just an ongoing battle to try and keep the drugs out. The inmates want them. It causes problems for everybody, fights. It's an ongoing battle," said Scott.

Sheriff deputies say they are also catching more and more people trying to bring in drugs to the Hall of Justice.
"On a day to day basis," said Deputy Kevin Miracle.

Deputies usually catch the illegal items at the front door.
"I don't know if they're trying to bring it in on purpose, or if it's just they're under the influence so bad that they don't even realize they're bringing it in," said Miracle.

Each culprit is arrested. "They just end up with more charges," said Miracle.

The charges are felonies which mean more jail time.
