'Mugg-Z Café' opens inside Prestonsburg nursing home

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WYMT) - There is a new café open in Prestonsburg with a unique name and an unlikely location. 'Mugg-Z Café' at Riverview Health Care is a way to help the community connect with some of it's oldest members.

Step inside Riverview Health Care and chances are you will instantly be greeted by a four-legged friend.

Marlene Vanhoose says, "Oh Mugg-Z!! Well you would call him the major of this place."

Adopted from the 'Mutts with Manners' organization by, Nathan Thomas, who was the facility's chaplain...Mugg-Z quickly made an impact.

Inez Maynard says, "He is so special, a very special dog." She adds, "He likes everybody that comes around him. He doesn't dislike anybody."

So of course many will tell you Mugg-Z Café is the perfect name for the new addition.

Thomas says, "He is a part of this building. I think that is a true symbolic thing of the impact he is making on this place."

A café inside of the facility, allowing residents to getaway in a sense and even do a little shopping of their own. Offering homemade cupcakes, other food items, coffee, sodas, t-shirts, Mugg-Z memorabilia, and some toiletries.

Some of those living at Riverview also help run the café by baking some of Muggz's favorite dog treats that are also available.

Riverview Health Care CEO, Missy Allen says, "As part of the Eden Alternative, we are constantly trying to look at ways to enhance our elder's lives...we want to build a human habitat."

Mugg-Z Café is not only for folks living at Riverview but also a place they hope the community will also enjoy.

Allen says, "We want our elders to stay connected to community. We want folks to see a nursing home is not a place you go to die...the stereotypical view. We want folks to understand that life goes on and we want each day to be the best it can for our elders.

Family members are also excited about the new hangout spot. Allen explains, "He is excited to come in after dinner and just sit and talk with his mom over a cup of coffee."

Taking the lead from their favorite mutt to improve their quality of life and their community.

Money made through the café is going to the quality of life program at Riverview, which helps fund various activities for the seniors.

The café also has computers and the therapy team is planning to help residents connect with family through social media.
