Murder suspect's family says he is innocent

SALYERSVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - Family members say he was framed, however, investigators believe they have their man. The family of Magoffin County murder suspect, Daniel Hackworth, believe he is innocent.

Police say, Hackworth, shot and killed 49-year-old, Donnie Allen, back in January. His sister-in-law, Tarena Keeton, explains that the family does not believe that is the case, "We have heard rumors that there is people out bragging about that they did it and framed him for it."

Officials say they found Hackworth inside Allen's home with a gun and Allen's body in the yard. Family members and Hackworth's defense attorney say he had no motive to harm Mr. Allen. Public Defender Myles Holbrook explains, "There are very credible allegations that people in the community wanted to bring harm to Mr. Allen...Daniel Hackworth was not one of those people."

Hackworth's family members say they hope investigators will look further into the case because they believe the person or possibly people responsible for the murder are still out in the public. Keeton says, "He was there so they figure they've got the person that did it, other than trying to find anybody else."

WYMT placed a call to investigators on Tuesday, who say they have no comment at this time.

Holbrook says, "They have a man who found someone outside of the residence, helped contact police and waited on police to get there. That doesn't sound like a criminal mastermind to me."

Hackworth has entered a not guilty plea. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 17th.
