A Knox County murder suspect's girlfriend claims he was only trying to protect himself.
Randell Wade Bays, 26, is accused of stabbing Bobby Hamilton, 42, two weeks ago.
Tuesday he appeared in court for a preliminary hearing, but the hearing was postponed so he can undergo an evaluation.
Susanne Renee Terrell says her boyfriend, Randell Wade Bays, is mentally handicapped and partially deaf and does not understand what happened on March 29th.
"He's in shock. His mother said he does not even know what is going on.>
She says she, Bays, and his mother Judy were invited to Judy's boyfriend Bobby Hamilton's home for the night.
"We was having a great time. I didn't think nothing like this was going to happen," Terrell said.
The dinner party ended when police say Bays stabbed Hamilton. Terrell says it started after the two men drank moonshine.
"They got into an argument and Bob was up in his face," said Terrell.
She said the fight ended and Hamilton went to sleep, but when he awoke, she claims the fighting started again.
"I seen him grab Wade (on the throat) and just squeeze with all he had and jump and body slam him, and just slammed him to the kitchen floor" said Terrell.
She says that's when Bays grabbed a knife in the kitchen.
"It was so quick, that big ole steak knife and it went in that far, half the blade, about an eight inch blade and four inches went in," Terrell said.
She said Hamilton died on the porch before an ambulance arrived.
"It was the awfullest thing," Terrell said.
State Police charged Bays with murder after interviewing him on March 29th.
Tuesday after the court proceedings, the detective and assistant county attorney could not comment on the case.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled in two weeks after Bays undergoes an evaluation.
He is being held in the Knox County Detention Center on a $250,000 bond.
