Murder trial begins

Updated: Mon 8:02 PM, May 23, 2011

A Johnson County woman admits she shot her former boyfriend.

Donna Wheeler is charged with murder in the death of James T. Sparks.

Her trial started Monday.

Johnson County Sheriff Deputies took the witness stand first and said Donna Wheeler admitted she shot her former boyfriend, James T. Sparks.

In April of last year, deputies responded to a 9-1-1 call of shots fired at her home on Barber Branch.

“Observed Ms. Wheeler standing in the doorway of the residence,” Deputy Burke said.

The first deputy on scene says he found Sparks dead outside the home, next to the front porch. Officials say he was shot in the back.

Deputies testified several rounds were fired from the gun and there was a smell of alcohol and beer cans at the house.

Defense attorneys pointed out this was not the first time deputies responded to the home.

They had several police reports for problems at the house between Wheeler and Sparks.

The trial continues with more testimony on Tuesday.

Officials say the defense could start calling witnesses soon.
