People in one community are joining forces to fight a problem plaguing Letcher County.

Many communities in the Blackey area have created neighborhood watch groups to report anything suspicious, and right now they say the biggest problem is copper thefts.

Greg Whitaker never knows if when he picks up the phone, if he will have a signal or not.

He says about one year ago copper thieves started stealing telephone lines causing this community to go without phone service for days at a time, so he got together with his neighbors to do something about it.

About three years ago, they formed neighborhood watch group to be the eyes and ears in their communities.

"We started this because of drugs in the community. We were having a drug problem, and it's kinda morphed into now it's a copper theft problem," said Whitaker.

Since the Sheriff Office can not patrol all areas of the county at all times, this group does not go searching, but they are constantly watching.

"We just watch and see what's happening and call the sheriff and say you need to go check such and such out, or if this car was suspicious setting there when it shouldn't have been," said Whitaker.

Greg Whitaker says the Burton Hill Community is teaming up with Blackey, Crase's Branch and Carccassone communities to hold monthly meetings with the sheriff.
