MARTIN, Ky. (WYMT) - A roof was torn off a house in Floyd County Wednesday morning due to high winds. Once they saw the damage, neighbors in the Arkansas Creek community pitched in to try and fix the problem as quickly as possible.

Homeowner Barbara Caudill said she was in her bedroom when she heard the wind ripping apart her home, "I heard this rain and wind come and it was so hard, I thought it was going to take the whole house and then I looked up and the roof was on the side of the hill."

Sparkle Conn immediately went to check on her elderly neighbors when she heard the wind tear through the area, and once she saw the damage, she took action.

Conn says, "I called some neighbors in hoping we could get some men out here to lay some lumber and tin on the house and save as much as we can for them."

Despite relentless rain, neighbors worked quickly to keep as much water out of the house as possible. Conn explains, "The neighbor is in need really bad right now, and the rain doesn't slow us down...when you need help, you need help."

As she picks up debris from her home, Caudill says she doesn't know what she would do without her neighbors, "We would be out of luck, we sure would. It is good to have nieghbors to help."

Caudill knows it could have been much worse for her and her bed-ridden husband and she is thankful the roof was the only thing damaged, " I am thankful to God that we are safe and that it didn't destroy more of the house than it did."
