Neighbors remember man killed in ambulance wreck

People who live along Highway 30 in Owsley County say Billy Smith was a good neighbor and they'll miss seeing him out and about.

"They was just together all the time, him and Sam," says Verlain Lane.

Sam was Smith's dog. Neighbors say they'd often see them out walking.

"Him and Sam would get out and take their walk up the side road," says Lane.

Neighbors say that's what the two were doing around 4:30 yesterday when an ambulance carrying a patient on a non-emergency run hit and killed Smith. Sam is still missing.

"He was a good guy," says Lane.

Lane says he's known Smith about 10 years and he was passionate about landscaping.

"I'd see him about every other day. I'll miss him a lot. Me and him would talk about flowers, and what have you, landscaping. I'll miss him," says Lane.

State Police investigators will be back later this week to try and find out exactly what happened. They're waiting on toxicology results from the driver, and so far no charges have been filed. Officials with the ambulance service tell us the driver has been suspended with pay until the investigation is over. The EMS crew and patient escaped injury in the accident.
