FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Officials in Floyd County are adding more than 10 miles of trails around Dewey Lake.

Two years ago the German Bridge Campground was about to be shut down, but since then officials in Floyd County have pushed to keep the campground open and add to what it offers. Now they have added several miles of trails to the existing trails around Dewey Lake.

"We feel like that this will enhance our opportunity of getting tourists to come to the Dewey Lake area," said Big Sandy Trail Riders Club President Denzil Allen.

The Big Sandy Trail Riders Club recently got 10.7 miles of trails approved.

"This is a result of roads that was in the area from people that used the roads years ago before they put the dam in," said Allen.

They say by using those existing roads little construction is needed on the trails. All the trails are open and ready for use, and officials say one of the main benefits is that now they make a loop around dewey lake.

"To me it's a little bit boring to ride say 10 miles and then you come back over that same 10 miles," said Allen.

The new trail lines connect to the existing 25 miles of trails in the area.

"You go around, and at all times you're looking at different scenery, different wildlife," said Allen.

They say this is a big step in promoting tourism for Floyd County.

Officials say even though the trails are ready and open to the public they are applying for grants that will help them make improvements to them.
