FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Newly sworn in Agriculture Commissioner
Jamie Comer has fired the girlfriend of his predecessor, Richie
Comer told The Courier-Journal that Stephanie Sandmann was among 16 nonmerit employees in the department who were let go
Sandmann was hired as a special assistant by Farmer a week
before the November election in which he was running for lieutenant
governor on the Republican ticket with Senate President David
Williams. They lost to Gov. Steve Beshear.
Comer's general counsel said Sandmann was let go from her
$60,000-a-year job on Tuesday, the day after Comer was sworn in.
As a political appointee, Sandmann can be fired without cause.
When Farmer hired her, he defended the action, saying she was
qualified and he was advised that it would be legal to do so.
