A man says he jumped into action to rescue his wife and children after their home in Laurel County caught on fire.

Joey Rice says he spotted the fire at his home on Day Road Saturday, after returning from his morning hunt.

"The whole house was smoking and I went up to the door and it was so smoky that I couldn't see nothing," Rice said.

Rice's wife, Brittany, and their sons, 2-year-old Braxton and 1-year-old Brayden were inside.

"I ripped the air conditioner out of the window and dove in," Rice said. "I was able to get my two boys and I went in two or three more times looking for my wife and couldn’t find her."

Rice eventually found Brittany and carried her out of the home.

Brittany Rice and the two children were all taken to UK Hospital. The children were released Sunday, but Rice is still listed in serious condition.

Family members say Brittany Rice is on a ventilator because of the injuries she has to her lungs and throat.

Investigators are still trying to figure out the cause of the fire.
