It's a new way to warn people of dangerous weather, amber alerts, and other emergencies.
In the coming weeks, cell phone carriers and the federal government will launch a system that will automatically send you emergency text messages!
Starting later this month a new text alert system will go into affect.
It will be a way to warn individuals of life threatening events.
From wide scale dangers like tornadoes to more localized threats in your area.
“It sends a broadcast signal to every phone that is in the area. So, if you live in CA, but happen to be in Baltimore, you'll get Baltimore’s alert, you won't get California's alert,” Chris Guttman-McCabe said.
The government alerts are free and you don't have to sign up for anything to get them.
The alerts are not limited to just weather instances either.
Warnings will go out for imminent threats such as earthquakes as well as Amber Alerts and Presidential alerts for national emergencies.
The hope is that these text alerts will help save lives.
A way for the government to relay urgent messages on a wide scale.
In hopes of giving people a running start to get out of harm’s way as soon as possible.
The weather alerts will only be for weather warnings, not the less severe weather watches.
