The Three Point Volunteer Fire Department in Whitley County closed last month after state officials said the members did not have adequate training.
But officials in Whitley County are now opening a new volunteer fire department.
The Three Point District in Whitley County will no longer be without a volunteer fire department.
"It really generated concern when it no longer had a volunteer that was servicing that area," said Whitley County Judge Executive Pat White, Jr.
The final stages of planning are in the works.
"October 1st is the date to actually take over. We have actually been approved by the fiscal court, and we have received our letter from the state fire commission granting us the permission to operate," said Assistant Fire Chief Brandon Woods.
After a fiscal court meeting, it was decided the volunteers of the new fire department would choose the name.
They chose Whitley County Volunteer Fire Department.
"We just wanted something different. We didn't want it to be the same thing," said Assistant Fire Chief Woods.
The Three Point District starts here off Highway 25 and covers about 10 to 12 miles where thousands of people live in Whitley County.
Judge Executive White says surrounding fire departments did step up when Three Point closed.
But having an independent department within that district will better serve that area.
"It's nice to have a fire department that is especially or just for your district. You know that you have a fire department, and if you need help, they respond," said Assistant Fire Chief Woods.
The assistant fire chief says the new department's fire truck is being serviced and lettered today.
The final board meeting is Monday night at 6:30. The board will decide on the location of the new fire department.
