Breathitt County, Kentucky - It is heating up outside and inside some Breathitt County classrooms.
Thursday, we learned the air conditioning unit at Marie Roberts-Caney Elementary School is not working, so we went looking for answers.
What we learned is a resolution to the problem is not going to happen anytime soon.
State Manager Larry Hammond says the lack of air conditioning is only affecting Marie Roberts-Caney Elementary School.
Officials on the Breathitt County School Board say they knew about this issue in Winter, when the chiller for the air conditioning unit froze.
Larry Hammond says the school board is strapped for funds and looking at various issues throughout the district to make facility improvements.
"I think the fact that it has got significantly warmer and I mean in a hurry it's gotten everyone's attention. There's no denying it's uncomfortable, but it's something that we cannot get around at this point and time."
Hammond says the last day of school is June 6. The air conditioning unit will not be repaired by that time. Officials say they have purchased fans for the classrooms.
The principal preferred not to comment, but says this is a small school with less than 300 students and the parents were notified.
