Obama issues call for equal rights for gays

Posted: Tue 3:00 AM, Jan 22, 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) - In his second inaugural address, President Barack Obama has issued a declaration of support for full gay rights.

He compared the struggle for those rights to earlier crusades for women's suffrage and racial equality.

Obama said, "Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law." He said, "If we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well."

Obama waited until his campaign for re-election last year to announce his support for gay marriage.
