Officials blame cold weather for fewer blood donations

Cold weather means the Kentucky Blood Center is struggling to keep up the blood supply.

Officials say the frigid winter weather caused blood drives to be canceled and low donor turn outs.

They say throughout the commonwealth 54 people donated in the past two days, but they transfused more than 400 units leaving a serious shortage.

"In this area we have the hollows where it's hard to get in and out of. A lot of people has not had water. They've not had electricity, so it's hard for people to get around in this area during bad times," said Brandy Little with KBC in Pikeville.

KBC officials say anyone who donates blood this week could win a $200 Visa gift card.
