Officials prepare for Memorial Day weekend on the water

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WYMT) - As Memorial Day weekend approaches, law enforcement officials want to remind folks headed out on the water of some tips to have a fun but safe holiday.

The water is calm at Dewey Lake this weekend, but boaters know next weekend will be a different scene. Bruce Ritz says, "Going to be a great crowd next weekend on Memorial Day weekend."

As boaters get ready to hit the water, law enforcement officials are preparing to make sure everyone has a safe holiday weekend. Officer Jim Marshall explains, "We will be inspecting boats make sure they have life jackets for each passenger."

Officer Marshall says each life jacket needs to be easily accessible in case of an emergency.

Officials say one of the main things they will be looking for out on the water is that all children under the age of 12 in a boat traveling above idle speed are wearing life jackets. Officer Marshall says, "Nobody wants to work a drowning but nobody definitely wants to work a child drowning.

They will also be concentrating enforcement on boating under the influence, because officials say about 50% of Kentucky's fatal boating accidents involve alcohol. Officer Marshall says, "Take your time, enjoy yourselves, don't drink alcohol until or after you've left the water."

Ritz says he is looking forward to the large crowd on the lake next weekend, "Just have a great time, bring the kids out, feed the ducks, do whatever, and fish."

Officer Marshall says lake goers will have a fun and safe weekend if they follow these five tips, "Take your time, be aware of other boaters, don't drink alcohol, everybody have a life jacket either on or readily accessible, everybody wear their kill switches for their boats."

This entire week is recognized as National Safe Boating Week.
