Officials meet in Southwest Virginia to deal with trash problem

From CBS affiliate WJHL:

Southwest Virginia legislators, judges, attorneys and law enforcement officials met Tuesday night in Lebanon to discuss possible solutions to illegal dumping and littering in Virginia.

Members of Keep Southwest Virginia Beautiful hosted the meeting and urged law makers to adopt an environmental court program similar to one currently being used in Memphis, Tennessee.

Keep Southwest Virginia Beautiful Chairman, Bobby Justus, hopes setting aside court days specifically to deal with environmental crimes could bring focus to the problem and result in stiffer penalties for offenders.

Justus said more than 1,200 illegal dump sites have been mapped in Southwest Virginia and more than 600 have been cleaned up.
