Old school fire is under investigation

Eubank, KY (WYMT) - It is one of the last remaining structures of the old Eubank school, holding lots of memories for many in community straddling the Pulaski-Lincoln County line. But it was almost destroyed. Now the question in this community, was it the work of a serial arsonist back doing his dirty work?

“I think I grew up more in that little school than I have the rest of my life,” said Jeffrey Rutheford, speaking of the building that used to house the 8th grade classrooms at the old Eubank School.

Rutheford is saddened that someone tried to burn down the old classroom where learned English and Math, and a lot about life itself.

“I spent a lot of my life there. So it’s a like a landmark to me,” he said.

The fire was first spotted after 7 a.m. Monday. The fire department arrived to find some flames and a lot of smoke.

“It’s mostly smoke damage to the inside of the building. There is a spot in the floor that’s burned out,” said Fire Chief Norman Rutheford.

The chief believes it was intentionally set..just like nearly a dozen other fires earlier this year that destroyed the old high school, parts of several businesses and at least one vacant home. The fire brings back a lot of painful memories and a strong message for whoever may be doing it.

“Everything you’ll do you’ll answer for in the end. I hope they catch you and put you away,” said Jeffrey Rutheford.

The cause and nature remains under investigation by a special unit from Somerset and officials stress that at this point it is too early to know if this fire was started by the same person who started the other ones earlier this year.
