Letcher County shooting leaves one dead

Updated: Thu 7:08 PM, Nov 22, 2012

GORDON, Ky. (WYMT) – A man was shot and killed Wednesday night in Letcher County.

Arthur Cornett says he has been friends with his neighbors for years.

“Everyday we'd talk to one another. He'd get fish and give it to me, and garden food down here, just good neighbors and all around good friend. It's sad,” said Cornett.

His friend James Brown allegedly shot and killed Wayne Duff and Cornett says he overheard the argument that started it all.

I just heard them into it, arguing you know and next thing I know I heard a gunshot.

Police said Duff was trying to break in to Mr. Brown's residence, but it wasn't until Duff approached him that he fired the handgun.

The coroner reported that after duff was shot in the chest he tried to make it back to his own home just a few feet away but instead they found him on Thorn Drive, halfway between the two homes.

It was a scene that has left family friends on edge and in shock.

“I worry about him because he's such a good friend of mine, him and his wife both,” said Cornett, on a holiday that he said was difficult to stay thankful through.

No charges have been filed against James Brown, and the case will be presented before the Letcher County Grand Jury.
