KNOX COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Update 5-5-14

A Knox County family is mourning the loss of a teenager.

State police say 17-year-old Shawn Caleb Smith died when his car flipped and caught on fire on Turkey Creek Road on Saturday.

"He always tried to help everybody he could. He always had a smile on his face. That's what I miss most is his smile," said the teen's father, Shawn Smith.

State Police say the teenage Smith and at least five other people were in a car on Turkey Creek Road early Saturday morning when it went off the road, flipped over, and caught on fire.

Investigators say Smith was trapped on the driver's side in the burning car. The Knox County Coroner pronounced him dead at the scene.

"I hope no parent has to go through what I'm going through today," said Smith.

Smith says he will always remember how his son always acted goofy to make people laugh.

"Everybody loved him, I mean, just everybody loved him. He talked to everybody. He never met a stranger. He always talked to everybody," said Smith.

Though the smile and laughter are gone, Smith believes his son is looking down on him.

"I know it. I can feel it in my heart. It don't bother me at all that I know where he's at. He's in a lot better place than I am," Smith said.

Shawn Caleb Smith was a new father himself. He also leaves behind a three month old son, which Smith says will help the family cope with the loss.

"Try to keep his memory alive, mostly through his son," Smith said.

Hampton Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. The family says they will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday at 6:00pm. The funeral and burial will be Thursday at 1:00pm.

Grief counselors were at Knox County schools on Monday.

Family members tell us 29-year-old Charles Arthur Wombles was also in the car and is at the UT Medical Center in Knoxville.

The names and conditions of the other passengers have not been released but the Smith family tells us they are juveniles.
