RACCOON CREEK, Ky. (WYMT) - Update:
A Laurel County man accused of murder was back in court Tuesday.
A preliminary hearing was held for Gary Collier, where the judge found probable cause.
The case was then sent to the Laurel County Grand Jury.
Collier's bond was set for $200,000 cash.
A Laurel County man is accused of killing his nephew.
Sheriff's deputies believe Gary Collier, 61, gunned down Stephen Jack Sturgill, 44, Wednesday afternoon at a home on the right fork of Collier Road in the Raccoon Creek community of Laurel County.
Collier shot Sturgill once with a 12-gauge shotgun, deputies said. They believe the two men were arguing prior to the shooting.
Collier lives on Raccoon Creek Road, near the scene of the shooting, while Sturgill was from Tennessee, deputies said.
Neighbors cannot believe a murder happened in their small community.
"It blowed my mind, freaked me out," neighbor Janet Messer said. "I didn't have no clue something like that was going to happen. It's usually pretty quiet. There ain't hardly nothing happens on this creek."
Deputies took Collier to the Laurel County Detention Center and charged him with murder.
Sturgill's body was sent to Frankfort for an autopsy. The autopsy is scheduled to be performed Thursday.
One man is dead following a shooting in Laurel County.
Laurel County Sheriff's Deputy Gilbert Acciardo tells us it happened near Raccoon Creek, 10 miles east of London around 3:45 this evening.
No one else was hurt.
They do tell us they are questioning one person.
No one has been arrested at this point.
