Woman charged in Harlan stabbing pleads not guilty

HARLAN, Ky. (WYMT) - Update, 9/11/13, 5:30 p.m.

A Harlan County woman accused of stabbing another woman pleaded not guilty Wednesday.

Ginger Pendleton, also known as Ginger Pennington, pleaded not guilty to first degree assault in connection to the stabbing Tuesday outside a food stamp distribution office in downtown Harlan.

Pendleton, 21, stabbed Ashley Massey, 26, while the two were entangled in a fight that started over Facebook posts, police said.

Massey's niece, Dominique Thomas, 20, pleaded guilty Wednesday to disorderly conduct after police said she interfered with the scene.

Thomas paid a $50 fine and was released from jail, court officials said.

Pendleton is in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $20,000 full cash bond.

She has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Sept. 16.

Massey was kept overnight at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn., and was expected to return home Wednesday, police said.

Update, 9/10/13, 11 p.m.

One woman was taken to the hospital and two others are behind bars after a stabbing Tuesday in Harlan County.

The fight took place near a food stamp distribution office in downtown Harlan around noon and spilled over into the building's parking lot, police said.

Ginger Pendleton, 21, and Ashley Massey, 26, were fighting when Pendleton pulled a knife and stabbed Massey twice, police said.

"It appears maybe some taunting and threats have been exchanged over Facebook over possibly an ex boyfriend that one has now," Harlan Police Chief Mike Thomas said. "It just came to a boiling point (Tuesday)."

Police also arrested Massey's niece, Dominique Thomas, 20, for causing a disturbance at the scene.

Massey was taken to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn. Her condition was not immediately available, but police said her injuries were not life-threatening.

Pendleton was charged with first degree assault. Thomas was charged with disorderly conduct.

Both women were taken to the Harlan County Detention Center. They declined WYMT's requests for interviews.

A fight lands two women behind bars and the other in the hospital.

Police say Ginger Pennington, also known as Ginger Pendleton, stabbed Ashley Massey around noon Tuesday. It happened in front of the food stamp office on Cumberland Avenue in Harlan.

Massey was flown out Holston Valley Medical Center in Tennessee. Pennington was arrested on assault charges.

Police say Domonique Thomas, a family member of Ashley Massey, was arrested for disorderly conduct at the scene.
