Oneida Elementary School possibly closing

Updated: Mon 6:48 PM, May 07, 2012

Another elementary school in eastern Kentucky is in danger of closing.

The Clay County School Board is considering closing Oneida Elementary because of budget cuts and a decline in the school's population.

Last week, Beckham Bates Elementary in Letcher County held it's last day of school after the school board voted to close it next year, and now another school could be facing the same fate.

Oneida is a small rural town, with a small elementary school where 117 students attend.

Amy Davidson went to Oneida Elementary School, as well as her mother, husband and kids.

"It's kinda the center point of the community. Everything kind of revolves around the school," said Davidson.

Now that center point is in danger of closing due to more than $1 million in budget cuts and a declining school population.

"This forces us to be in a situation that no superintendent or board member wants to be in because we are about kids and what's best for the kids," said Clay County Schools Superintendent Reecia Samples.

She says this is not a done deal yet, and they will have to look at many factors before they make a final decision.

Many community members are worried about how long children will have to ride the bus to and from the nearest school, which is also the main concern of Superintendent Samples.

But, the school board has to look at all sides including the fact that so few kids attend the school.

"They keep saying it's about the numbers, it's about the numbers. It's not about the numbers, it's about the children," said Davidson.

The children are exactly why Superintendent Samples says this will be a tough decision.

There is a school board meeting Monday night at 6:00 p.m.

The superintendent says there will not be a vote on Oneida Elementary, but parents will be there for public comment.
